An ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) facility, also known as an Electrostatic Protected Area (EPA) or Electrostatic Protected Zone (EPZ), is a controlled environment designed to prevent electrostatic discharge from damaging sensitive electronic components, devices, or assemblies during manufacturing, testing, assembly, or repair processes. These facilities are essential in industries such as electronics, semiconductor manufacturing, aerospace, medical devices, and automotive, where even small electrostatic discharges can cause significant damage to sensitive equipment. All surfaces, equipment, and personnel are grounded to prevent the buildup of electrostatic charges. Dissipative or Conductive flooring and work surfaces are often used, and personnel may wear grounded wrist straps or footwear. Maintaining appropriate humidity levels helps to reduce electrostatic charges, as moisture in the air can dissipate static electricity. Humidity levels are typically controlled and monitored within the facility. Overall, ESD facilities play a critical role in safeguarding electronic components and devices from electrostatic discharge, helping to maintain product quality, reliability, and performance in various industries.
